Kolomoets Cup 2012

Post by Vitaliy » Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:14 pm

Black sea, Ukraine
This year, to start of competitions only 13 catamarans gathered. Not densely. Usually, boats happens twice more, it is seen the previous regattas thinned out ranks wishing to be driven. Some simply went to campaigns. Well it is fine who arrived – that good fellow, differently the regatta absolutely could not take place. All fleet was divided into two classes: to 10 sq.m (6 catamarans) and it is more than 10 sq.m (7 catamarans).

29.07.2012

According to the plan start of a regatta was from Azure on the island Dzharylgach. After opening of competitions start appointed on 12.00. The fleet came to water race began. Gradually the wind amplified from 5-6 m/s to 10-12 m/s. The short counter wave was unpleasant. But on it strengthening of a wind didn't end and by 15.00 wind force reached 15 m/s. Leaders started reducing the area of the main sail. Under the preliminary contract if it isn't possible to reach east region of the island, at 16.00 the leader comes to the coast, as was made. It was unreasonable to fight against a rigid head wind. The first transition made 20 km. - exactly a half from the planned 40 km. During this race didn't manage without loss: from 13 catamarans to the finish came only 8, from them from an elementary grade – 5 Ducky17 and 3 of the senior. The others, for various reasons left race.

9.00 Stage start island Dzharylgach – Iron Port, 40 km. With a fresh fair wind with a force of 6-7 m/s the escaped fleet came to water. The wind blew at an angle from the coast. Catamarans painted the horizon with multi-colored gennaker. With each new rush, the wind all amplified, and catamarans continued to disperse. Now our catamaran (Ducky17, UKR 71) surely went quicker than a wave, and GPS fixed speed more than 20 km/h. When flew the next rush, the catamaran quickly caught up and furiously cut ahead going wave, turning it into a cloud of splashes. During one of such rushes of GPS recorded the speed of 31,5 km/h (17 knots). There was a feeling that it not a limit for our catamaran. There was a wish to unload it and to disperse on the present, but we were in race. Periodically the wind abated, and then again started blowing with a former force. In such mode we the first reached Iron Port. We passed a stage 40 km long less, than in 2,5 hours, with an average speed of 16,8 km/h. Other participants were soon tightened. The sun was more similar on "burner" and cold beer in a shadow of a canopy of local cafe on the seashore where blown by a warm and strong wind, we and spent the rest of day appeared wonderful rescue, and by the evening returned to camp.

9.00 Stage start Iron Port – the Tendrovsky braid, 65 km. The Tendrovsky spit – the reserve to which coast it is forbidden to come, it watch local the huntsman. Only the extremity of a braid is free for visit. It was necessary to pull to the last to avoid stops in the reserve and possible troubles from communication with protection.
Morning met us the cloudy sky and a fresh wind about 8 m/s. The wind blew from the coast and the gennaker allowed to bear. It turned out to go along the coast. The gusting wind didn't allow to relax. On this transition to establish a speed record it didn't turn out, but steadily high speed yielded the results: at the maximum speed on transition – 25 km/h, average speed left about 16 km/h. Thus, 65 km were passed in 4 hours. The last kilometers were passed at an abating wind. Four leading catamarans managed to slip, the others got stuck till the evening.

Waiting time of the lagged behind fleet decided to pass away walk to a local beacon which was very entertaining. On a beacon us didn't let, told that it is on reconstruction, but to take a walk around and we could get acquainted with a life of lighthouse keepers. To surprise, the beacon appeared 1827, than caused special respect for and for people who constructed it.

09.00 Stage start the Tendrovsky braid – the Kinburnsky braid, 25 km. Departed from the coast with a breeze but as soon as reached an extremity of the Tendrovsky braid a wind I started growing stronger. We were on a way half when the wind began to amplify. There came the moment when to go under full sails became unsafe, the catamaran aimed to come to one float, and waves became more increasing more coolly. The decision to reduce the main sail was made. For this purpose laid down in drift. While worked with sails, I flew squall. Water around was reared by a short cool wave with which a wind broke lambs. Heavy rain which as quickly calmed the sea went to the next moment. Barrel not less than 18 m/s. Then the wind started abating. Further flaws repeated, but were weaker, than the first squall. To the coast already approached under full sails. .
On the bank of a braid the coniferous forest – an unusual combination grows. But in the wood the huntsman because of the increased fire danger didn't allow to stand local.

10.00 Stage start the Kinburnsky braid - the Tendrovsky braid, 25 km. Came back without adventures though the such could be back: start decided to make for an hour after usual and didn't get nearly to a thunder-storm. The fleet literally slipped out from under the big storm front. By a dinner the sky densely tightened clouds and it started to rain.

Exactly a year ago, from us one of founders of sailing tourism in Ukraine – Fedenyuk Victor Ivanovich in these parts left. To list all his merits one page is required not. Who was lucky to be familiar with this person, will forever hold kind in remembrance him. In the evening participants of a regatta gathered впомнить it, and also other left friends.
